Things We Love: August 26, 2011
Things We Love – Friday, August 26, 2011
Happy Friday!
Here are some things we’re loving this week here at Nixey HQ:
Reading
Bossypants by Tina Fey. It’s a smart, hilarious and cutting look at Tina Fey’s life, from her days at The Second City in Chicago, to being the first female head writer at SNL, to her current role as Executive Producer [and star] of 30 Rock. The book is available everywhere, but we suggest downloading the audiobook for about the same price… you’ll find yourself laughing inappropriately every time you listen. Feminism is alive and well.
Working
Following on the footsteps of the very successful Hottest at the Start campaign (warning: link is attention-grabbing, and probably NSFW [unless you work at our office]), Health Initiative for Men and Nixey Communications are working on a new web-based campaign to launch this fall. In addition, the Hottest at the Start PSA will begin running on OUT TV in Canada this month – check it out!
Watching
On Greed by Jamie Travis. We saw a retrospective of filmmaker (and UBC alumni!) Jamie Travis’ work last week at the fabulous Vancouver Queer Film Festival, and this little gem closed the show. Travis is currently in LA directing his first feature film, but he’s also the genius behind The Saddest Little Boy in the World and the Patterns trilogy.
Surfing
10 Words Worth Collecting and How to Use Them . Great article from PR Daily, a fabulous resource for those of us in the media relations/storytelling/wordsmithing business. It includes some great examples of what one of our clients once referred to as “three dollar words”. We hope it won’t leave you nonplussed.
Attending
The Vancouver Friends For Life Society is having an honest-to-goodness Bake Sale on Saturday August 27! Details on Facebook. You should come! There will be cake, a hot dog eating contest, and the knowledge that you’ve helped make life better for those living with life-threatening illnesses like HIV and cancer in our community. See you there!

The most tasteless Tweet of the year. Free advice: apologize. If there’s anything this week has taught us, it is that politics don’t have to be ugly in this country.
