  • 8 Questions and 2 Imperatives for Jill Tracy

    .

    .

    Who are you?
I’m Jill Tracy: Harper’s mom, Jess’ wife, and a Bruce Springsteen lovin’ girl from New Jersey that happily landed in Vancouver five and half years ago. I’m also President and Chief Creative Officer of B’stro, an interactive and branding agency with offices in Vancouver and in San Francisco.

    Who is your role model?
I don’t have a specific role model but I get inspired by different people all the time. Hillary Clinton’s recent speech on Human Rights and Ben Davis’ 120 lb journey probably make them my role models of the month.

    Describe your management style.
I delegate as much as I possibly can and rely on the team to think through problems, find creative solutions and make recommendations. On a daily basis I try to be a mentor, sounding board, cheerleader and honey badger but never a micro manager.

What is your biggest professional accomplishment?
I guess I’m most proud of the fact that I was able to move to Canada, a country where I had no contacts whatsoever and in a few short years, make the agency successful here. Launching the Caya brand, landing work with respected organizations like the BC Centre for Disease Control, and being the agency for the Vancouver Queer Film Festival and Bard on the Beach make me feel connected to the community and seeing how the work has been received reminds me that we’re heading in the right direction.

    What was your first job?
At age 7, I delivered illegal fireworks for my entrepreneurial older brothers (aged 13 and 14). Fireworks weren’t legal in our State so I was the front man, making the “drops” so my brothers didn’t get caught. I got paid in bottle rockets.

What are you reading right now?
The Sense of an Ending by Julian Barnes

Tell us one thing about yourself that might surprise people.
I was raised as a conservative Republican and went to Catholic Mass 6 times a week by choice.

What is the last conference you attended?
Does conference calling count? I do that often.

    Blackberry or iPhone?
I’m ambidextrous …but I retired my Blackberry a few years ago. I prefer my iPhone but I still carry an Android along with it because I can’t give up my US number (or my great Verizon North America plan).

    What’s your Internet guilty pleasure?
Houzz. I am a sucker for gorgeous interior design and when I get woken up in the night by my toddler, the photos of lovely interiors lull me back to sleep.
