8 Questions and 2 Imperatives for Bernice Paul
Who are you?
A Chinese Canadian gal from East Van; a bit of a nerd. I’m an Earth Horse with a young spirit (I’m not one of these “old souls”).
Who is your role model?
No one specific… I’d like to think I grab pieces of awesomeness from many different people and I try to incorporate their wisdom into different aspects of my life. But my grandpa was pretty cool. He was a tailor and had impeccable style.
Describe your management style.
I manage the way I’d like to be managed… I like to see initiative taken. Results-oriented actions mean a lot than words.
What is your biggest professional accomplishment?
As a marketer, that would be breathing life into the Modo brand. Professionally, nothing excites me more than hearing people talk about Modo with genuine warmth. I also get a kick from other organizations asking us for marketing or branding advice.
What was your first job?
I worked at a coffee and muffin shop in the Granville Island Public Market. Weekends were particularly frenetic… I think every young person should experience working in some retail or customer service role. Thickens the skin.
What are you reading right now?
number9dream by David Mitchell. I love all his work.
Tell us one thing about yourself that might surprise people.
I was a scientist. For about six years I worked for the Mounties in the forensic lab in Vancouver. I guess that’s surprising because I can spend a lot of time on my own staring down a microscope.
What is the last conference you attended?
Something sustainability-related.
Blackberry or iPhone?
What’s your Internet guilty pleasure?
Fashion/makeup/gossip blogs. Facebook is my frenemy.
